Change of office
Bach hands over IOC cheeky posts to Coventry
The IOC has a new president. Thomas Bach hands over the office to his successor Kirsty Coventry. She is the first woman at the IOC tip.
The new President Kirsty Coventry has formally adopted the office at the head of the International Olympic Committee from Thomas Bach. At a solemn ceremony in Lausanne, the 71-year-old German, a former world-class swimmer from Zimbabwe, symbolically handed over a key to the IOC main seat.
Bach clears the position after twelve years at the end of his second term, but remains connected to the IOC as honorary president. “I gave the Olympic movement everything I could,” said Bach.
Coventry as the first woman at IOC tip
The 1976 fencing Olympic champion led the IOC through turbulent times. Russian state doping, Corona pandemic, wars and the concern for almost all Olympic games in these years put Bach and the Olympic umbrella organization under continuous pressure. There was criticism of Bach because of his many years of nearby Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and his mild dealings with China’s human rights violations.
Coventry had prevailed against six male competitors in the election in March. The 41-year-old is the first woman in the highest IOC office and the first president from Africa. The two -time Olympic champion was the Bach’s desired candidate for his successor.
