The World Health Organization (WHO) points out that alcohol intake in drivers increases the probability of being involved in a road accident with serious and/or fatal consequences, since it produces negative effects on vision, coordination and attention on the road. . The vehicle recovery and accident assistance company Ituran detailed the consequences of alcohol consumption in driving and developed a series of recommendations for driving on the roads during this summer season.
What alterations does alcohol-driving produce?
The driver’s reaction time is altered; body functionality, heart rate, breathing and sleep are altered; produces a feeling of drowsiness that reduces the perception of risk; causes behavioral and conduct disturbances; increases aggressiveness and euphoria, while concentration decreases.
When the level of fatigue increases, the driver of the vehicle may experience:
Difficult to focus.
Blurred vision and itchy eyes.
Constant blinking.
Muscle cramps or back pain.
Need to move in the seat.
Ringing in ears.
Drowsiness
Reduced physical and mental reaction time
Reduction in attention, due to which one does not see what is happening on the road and may incur a lack of attention to important signs.
Mood alteration and the possibility of aggressive behaviors appearing.
Recommendations to avoid emergencies on vacation:
1| Do not drive when tired, fatigued or drowsy. It is recommended for the driver to sleep between 7 and 9 hours.
2| In the case of undertaking a long trip, organize stops to rest every 2 hours approximately.
3| Do not consume alcohol if you are going to drive.
4| In case of taking medications, check that they do not cause drowsiness.
5| Do not drive at times where you would normally be sleeping.
6| Always wear the seat belt.
7| Respect traffic rules, without exception.
8| Look around constantly and report the maneuvers.
9| Maintain the appropriate safety distance and respect the minimum and maximum speeds.
10|Do not use cell phones or other technological devices while driving.
