Little by little, the offer began to improve. With more vehicles and less demand, dealerships had to change their script: from overpricing to discounts.
What is happening in the new car segment has a full impact on the used car segment. The change was so rapid and abrupt that it left owners who had their used car for sale confused. It should be noted that, during 2023, many “young” used cars were worth the same or more than the list price of the new car, which was sold at a premium.
From one day to the next they had to accept a drop in the value of their vehicle. Not everyone accepted it and this is evident in the resistance to adjust the price. This change is still felt in the market and, according to specialists, that whoever does not accept the new reality, does not sell.
In this context, last month was the best July since 1995 (the year in which measurements began) in used car sales, according to the Chamber of Automotive Commerce.
Scope consulted with Alejandro Lamassecretary of the entity that groups together used car dealerships to find out what is happening with prices. In this regard, he indicated that “as more new car offers begin to appear, the price gap between new and used cars widens. Those who do not respect this equation do not sell used cars. It’s that simple.”
“The same thing happens with those who dollarize national or Mercosur products and who list their prices in pesos. These models must be published at reasonable prices because otherwise it is very difficult to sell them. Even if the buyer later shows up with dollar bills. Many are making a mistake in not understanding this,” he added.
He also explained that “while the CETA (Certificate of Transfer of Vehicles) existed, it was possible to measure how used vehicles were marketed. Until then, 60% of the transactions were made through agencies, through dealers, and the rest were between individuals.”
Lamas indicated that “the gap depends on the models. A Toyota Yaris is not the same as a Fiat Cronos. Among the most sought-after models, it can range between 10% and 17%. This is always the case as long as there is delivery. For example, today you may have some difficulty buying a new Jeep Compass and, in that case, someone who has a used 2023 model asks for close to the value of the 0km. Maybe 5% less. On the other hand, another national model, with a fluid offer, if the seller does not agree to put it 20% below the 0km, he does not sell it.”
