The world of automobiles is undergoing the greatest upheaval since the invention of the combustion engine. New regulations, strict emissions standards, IT hurdles and the switch to electric drives mean that more and more long-serving models are being retired by manufacturers, sometimes despite their great success.
It affects big and small
This year, too, numerous cars are affected that have either dominated the streets for years or left people open-mouthed when driving past. Among them are real icons, such as the Nissan GT-R. The car, known as “Godzilla”, will in future only be built for the Japanese homeland, and experts believe that this will probably be the last series.
Real city cars are also disappearing from the scene. For example, the popular Abarth 595 is being sold off. The Smart Fortwo is also no longer being built this year.
Some cars are the classics of tomorrow
A few cars, including the Audi R8, are becoming real bestsellers in their old age – of course with the ulterior motive that the discontinued model series could become classics of the future and prices could rise.
For some manufacturers, it remains to be seen whether the bet will pay off. Jaguar, for example, is saying goodbye to all combustion engines in order to soon switch completely to electric cars and focus on them.
The gallery offers a small insight into cars that are now or soon will no longer be available to buy as new cars.
