Once very successful, many car manufacturers have disappeared from the scene in the past few decades. All the better for collectors: These vehicles are particularly popular these days – and that’s what happened to the brands.
There are many reasons why a company doesn’t make it. In some cases the products simply don’t take off, in other cases bad decisions made by management lead to ruin – even if the product is actually good and marketed well. Sometimes there are also political influences – the best example is probably VEB Sachsenring and its Trabant.
Many car brands have emerged over the past century. Some only lasted a few years, others lasted the entire century. Some brands are still trying to be revived today, others have disappeared completely.
Not every classic car is expensive – but some are unaffordable
The fact is: When a manufacturer stops production, collectors are happy. Because almost every car in this gallery still has enthusiasts who cherish and look after the heritage. With some cars, such as an old Rover or Saab, it’s even comparatively cheap to get started. Other manufacturers, especiallyüssenberg, are reserved for the well-heeled.
You can find out why the 15 brands in this gallery can no longer be found on new cars today by browsing through the short company histories.
