The first day of the year came with heavy rains in the City and Province. The fall of ice and the formation of an incipient tornado on the coast generated surprise.
After a New Year’s night without rain, the first day of 2025 started with a strong storm that fell on different areas of the City and Province of Buenos Aires. Hail was even recorded in the Costanera Norte, Palermo and other Buenos Aires neighborhoods. And there was even an incipient “tornado” in Mar Chiquita.
The phenomenon lasted less than 20 minutes and caused a temperature dropgoing from about 35 degrees of initial thermal sensation to almost 30 degrees. It also forced many people who were enjoying the New Year’s holiday outdoors to seek shelter from the rain.
At 5 p.m. hail fell again on Avenida Costanera. The C5N journalist, Mariano Onegasaid that the pieces of ice were approximately 5 cm in size.
The inhabitants of the City and districts of the Province of Buenos Aires captured the amount of hail and shared them on social networks.
There, the image of an incipient tornado in the Mar Chiquita area was also surprising. Although the waterspout did not reach the ground, the shape of the storm led experts to suggest the possibility that it may have been such a phenomenon, although at a much smaller magnitude than that observed in other areas of the world.
The weather was good on the night of the New Year’s celebration without rain but unstable and very humid. For the day, the forecasts indicated that there would be a deterioration over the hours and the arrival of precipitation was expected, which finally occurred in the afternoon.
