Germany is known as a sign forest – and most traffic signs can be learned in the driving school. However, there are rare exceptions that cause questions when driving past.
The rarest traffic sign in Germany is only 13 times – and even on about 140 kilometers of motorway north of Munich. No wonder that hardly anyone knows the sign and its meaning. Especially for tourists who are on the A9 between Pfaffenhofen and Kreuz Holledau, the question quickly arises how to behave correctly.
The answer: you can ignore it. This is rare in the road traffic regulations, but it happens. Because the so -called landmark signs, which have been set up with a distance of 2.5 kilometers along the A9, indicate no restriction or rule.
The signs with the black and white pattern are part of the “Digital test fields motorway” (DTA), which was set up in 2016. The pictogram serves autonomous cars that are tested there for orientation. The cameras of the vehicles can determine their position with the help of the landmark signs.
In 2016, when the signs were introduced, the then Federal Minister of Transport Alexander Dobrindt said: “Automated and networked vehicles control the road highly precisely. Together with the latest sensors and a centimeter -precise digital map, the new signs are another component on the way to the first fully digitized and fully networked street.”
Strange and crazy traffic signs from all over the world – that mean they mean

No, this sign does not mean that drunk drivers are often traveling on this street – it indicates that the road can be slippery when wet.
