Despite the threat from Mercosur, Uruguay insists on entering the Trans-Pacific Agreement

“We are going to do it, we feel fully entitled to do it, as we understand even if we do not share the claim of the three countries,” said the President of Uruguay at a press conference.

In turn, the President pointed out that the Uruguayan authorities have been “very frontal in hand in hand” with the other member countries of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in previous exchanges and announced that “these issues” will be on the table during the LXI Mercosur Summit that will take place in Montevideo next week.

“(The Summit) is going to be entertaining and we are going to talk about these issues because international law assists us, recent events of decisions that are not made by consensus assist us, for example the first reduction in tariffs agreed between Brazil and Argentina,” launched Lacalle Pou.

In turn, the president added that Uruguay already participates “in a reduction in tariffs”, as well as “in a very good agreement that was made to benefit the products and services of free zones“, alluding to the tariff exemption agreement signed this year with Brazil.
