Pandemic end: Hong Kong lures visitors with free flight tickets

Travel without quarantine: Hong Kong wants to return to the limelight with the end of the strict corona measures. A campaign worth millions should help.

The Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong wants to win back tourists with a charm offensive after the end of the strict corona measures. Prime Minister John Lee announced on Thursday that 500,000 free airline tickets will be distributed to visitors from all over the world from March. The tickets are said to be available through local airlines. Additional free flights are reserved for Hong Kongers and visitors from mainland China.

Hong Kong wants to return to the limelight with a large-scale campaign. The Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post” spoke of the equivalent of 255 million US dollars (around 231.7 million euros) for the entire campaign.

Even before the Chinese mainland, the financial metropolis had lifted many of its strict entry regulations in the fall. Previously, travelers had to endure a hotel quarantine, which caused the number of visitors to collapse. Hong Kong’s economy shrank by 3.5 percent last year. Normality hasn’t quite returned yet. Masks are still compulsory in Hong Kong not only in public buildings, but also on the street.
