Volkswagen’s electric market share was just 2.4 percent, reports the “Handelsblatt” (Wednesday edition), citing insurance data from the People’s Republic available to it. BMW, Mercedes and Audi even failed at the one percent hurdle with 0.8, 0.3 and 0.1 percent respectively.

According to the information, a total of 5.7 million electric cars were registered in China in 2022. Only about 200,000 of them could be assigned to German brands. The majority of the electric cars sold come from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and US competitor Tesla. According to the information, Tesla was able to sell more cars in China from its compact SUV Model Y alone than the German car manufacturers with all their electric models combined.

While the combustion vehicles from German manufacturers are among the best-selling models in China, according to the report, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes have had problems selling significant numbers of their electric cars there for years.
