The economist Moritz Schularick becomes president of the influential Kiel Institute for the World Economy. In the interview he talks about politicians who know little about the world economy and are misled by lobbyists – and how he wants to change that.

Mr Schularick, from June you will be the new President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). You have already decided against the post in the past. What has changed?
Moritz Schularick: The world has changed. The global economic coordinates are currently being remeasured. This is of central importance for the German economy and the IfW is the most exciting and important institute that we have in Germany.
