As reported by INDEC this Tuesday, March 28, The total gross external debt stock with debt securities at residual nominal value as of December 31, 2022 was estimated at US$276,694 million. This implies an increase of US$3,879 million compared to the third quarter of last year.

“This increase was mainly due to the rise of US$8,071 million registered in the debt of the General Government sector”, indicated the INDEC. For their part, the institutional sectors Central Bank and other financial companies registered smaller increases in their external debts, u$s834 million and u$s110 millionrespectively.

As for the sector made up of Non-financial corporations, households and NPISHs rreduced its external debt to nominal value in US$5,057 million. He indebtedness of deposit-taking companies also registered a decrease, in this case, of US$80 million.

For his part, the stock of total gross external debt at market value was estimated at US$226,034 millionwhen registering an increase of US$5,335 million compared to the previous quarter. “The stock of gross external debt of the institutional sectors General Government, Central Bank and Other financial companies were the drivers of the rise,” explained INDEC.

Indeed, while the debt at market value of the first of them increased US$8,362 million, the monetary authority and Other financial companies registered an increase of US$834 million and US$138 million, respectively. These increases were partially offset by the US$ 3,918 million reduction in the debt of non-financial corporations, households and ISFLSH. Likewise, the debt issued by the deposit-taking companies decreased by US$81 million.

At the same time, a current account surplus of US$1,732 million was registered in the fourth quarter of last year, from a corrected deficit of US$3,165 million in the previous quarter. In all of 2022, the balance showed a negative of US$3,788 million.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the Government had reported a positive balance of US$291 million in its checking account.
