Shopping without a wallet? This is not a problem for more and more people. Because they use the digital debit cards on their smartphones to pay at the checkout by holding the cell phone in front of the reader. 39 percent of all debit cards at Raiffeisen Oberösterreich are also used digitally – an increase of 159 percent compared to 2021.

In total, more than 77 million transactions with debit cards were registered at the cash register terminals (“point of sale”) in the previous year. That is a fifth more than in 2021. 85 percent of the payment process was contactless.

The reason for this is also that the limit for amounts that can be paid contactlessly – without entering the PIN code – has been increased to 50 euros. According to the Raiffeisen Landesbank (RLB), the average amount paid by card is currently 41.93 euros.

When presenting the balance sheet, Heinrich Schaller, General Manager of the RLB, suggested that “a little more” be considered to the allowed amount. He expects this to lead to a renewed increase in contactless payments.
