Of the 19.36 million cubic meters harvested without bark, 37 percent was damaged wood, almost half because of the bark beetle. According to Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig, the driving force behind the increase in felling this year was the higher prices and only in the federal states of Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol the amount of damaged wood. Around 60 percent of the logging came from the 140,000 small forest owners with less than 200 hectares of forest, around 30 percent from 1,600 large forest owners and a good ten percent from the federal forests.
