Hotels, guesthouses and Co.: Germany tourism in March below the pre-corona level

Tourism in Germany is slowly recovering from the Corona crisis. In March, the number of overnight stays increased. However, the pre-crisis level has not yet been reached.

Despite the increase in the number of overnight stays, tourism in Germany fell short of the level before the Corona crisis in March.

Hotels, guesthouses and the like booked 31.8 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests, according to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office. That was 26.5 percent more than in the same month last year, which was still partly characterized by corona-related restrictions. Compared to March 2019, the month before the pandemic, a minus of 3.7 percent was recorded.

At 26.7 million, the number of overnight stays by travelers from Germany almost reached the pre-crisis level (minus 1.1 percent). Cross-border tourism in Germany, on the other hand, lagged behind. 5.1 million overnight stays were counted by guests from abroad. That was 15.0 percent less than in March 2019.

Businesses with at least ten beds or camping pitches are taken into account.
