Brazil intercedes with the US on behalf of Argentina for the Fund

The Brazilian Minister of Economy, Fernando Haddad, expressed to the United States Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, his concern about the economic situation facing Argentina and maintained that the solution involves a renegotiation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). that must be endorsed by Washington.

“I brought this issue up because it’s an important issue. Argentina is a very important country in the world and particularly in South America. Secondly, because the solution for Argentina goes through the IMF. If Brazil and the United States are together in this support, it can make things easier for Argentina”, Haddad assured.

The minister is in Japan where he will participate in the meeting of ministers of the Group of 7 (United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Italy and Great Britain) to which Brazil was invited. Haddad anticipated that next week -in Hiroshima- President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will attend the G-7 summit as a guest and will bring the same message about Argentina, which is Brazil’s third largest trading partner after China and the US. “President Lula will come next week with the same concern, I am anticipating what he himself, by word of mouth, will bring to Argentina,” he said.

The minister assured that the Secretary of the Treasury of the Joe Biden government did not expect the issue of Argentina to be on the agenda of the dialogue they held. “She was surprised by this matter that I put on the table, but for us it is essential that this problem in Argentina be resolved,” Haddad stressed.
