Robert Habeck: The owner renames her café in protest

Robert Habeck is making himself unpopular with his plans for an LNG terminal on Rügen. A café owner wants to make a statement by changing the name of her restaurant.

Who at the “Cafe Habeck’s” on Rügen, has of course immediately thought of the famous namesake for some time now. However, the reactions of many guests are currently critical, reports owner Vanessa Wellbrock of the “Ostseezeitung”: “Tell me, do you have something to do with the gentleman ?”, she is then asked by guests.

The Green Economics Minister is not on good terms on the Baltic Sea island. The reason is Habeck’s plans for an LNG terminal to be built in Mukran in the east of Rügen. “It’s incomprehensible. Nature has to be preserved, the island lives from tourism, and then you do something like that,” Vannesa Wellbrock criticized the minister. In protest against this, the “Cafe Habeck’s” will be called differently from June 1st.

Robert Habeck is planning an LNG terminal on Rügen

According to federal plans, two special ships are to be stationed in the port, which is already in industrial use, to convert and feed in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered by ship. However, the planned terminal for the import of LNG is highly controversial. The state government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the residents see the island as a tourism location at risk. In addition, critics bring environmental protection and nature conservation as an argument against the construction. Among other things, the nature conservation association is calling for the project to be stopped.

Robert Habeck came to Mukran last week to talk about the controversial plans. The minister understood the concerns of the islanders, but pointed out again that “supply security” must be guaranteed. The terminal is intended to prevent bottlenecks if the winter gets colder than expected or if there are failures in the existing infrastructure or ongoing deliveries from Russia to the EU.

However, many people on Rügen have little understanding for this – as does Vanessa Wellbrock. The café operator will change the name of her restaurant, although it originally had nothing to do with the Green politician. In the future, the café will be named after her and “Wellbrock’s”.
