The consumption of bovine meat in Argentina would climb in 2023 to its highest level in the last five years, said the Rosario Stock Exchange.
Argentina continues to be the largest consumer of this food in the world, and despite projections of annual inflation well above 100%, this year the volume would be the highest since 2018.
Beef, cooked on the grill with family or friends, is part of our cultural fabric and its consumption levels are the subject of public policies and used as an indicator of standard of living.
With the cyclical economic crises and inflation that has been increasing in recent years, food consumption has been steadily declining in recent decades, while sales of other meats such as pork and poultry have grown .
However, in a year in which the latest central bank survey of analysts shows inflation for 2023 of 126%, beef consumption would be 53.1 kilograms per inhabitant, the highest volume since 2008, according to the Rosario Stock Exchange (BCR).
“The purchasing power in terms of beef has improved in the last two years, both due to its relationship with wages and with the prices of other meats, which is why its relative participation in consumption has increased,” said the Stock Exchange, which made its estimates based on official data.
In turn, the total consumption of meat -bovine, pork and poultry- would also grow in 2023, with an expected year-on-year rise of 4.2%, to 115.2 kilograms per person, according to the Stock Market report.
The composition of the meat diet of the average inhabitant would be: 46% beef, 39% poultry and 15% pork. The proportion of bovine meat would have increased 2.3 percentage points compared to 2022, reaching levels close to those of 2019.
