In the next few years, the number of economically active people will decline significantly due to demography. According to a study, 400,000 people would have to immigrate each year to counteract this.
According to a study, Germany is finding it increasingly difficult to attract enough immigrants.
The Federal Republic of Germany needs 400,000 annually to keep the number of economically active people constant, said the Nuremberg Institute for Employment Research (IAB). The Federal Statistical Office put the number of net immigrants for 2020 at 208,586.
Due to demographic change, the number of economically active people in Germany is steadily decreasing – even if women were to increase the number of their working hours significantly and older workers would later retire, the number would drop from the current 47 million to 44 million if only 100,000 workers were employed annually immigrated.
Decrease due to demographics
Demographics alone will reduce the potential labor force by 7.2 million people by 2035. Longer working hours for older people and women can only alleviate this, but not compensate for it – the potential is estimated at 3.4 million. “If the migratory flows remain as they were observed over a longer period of time before the pandemic, the potential labor force will decrease by six percent by 2035, but the decrease by 2060 will be almost 20 percent,” said IAB researcher Johann Fuchs.
Demographic change is also having an effect in the traditional countries of origin within the EU. The pay, especially in the lower wage groups, is not significantly worse than in Germany. In addition, with higher immigration, the size of the foreign population living in Germany increases and, at the same time, the number of their departures. Only with annual net immigration of 400,000 people does the potential labor force remain at the starting level in the long term.
