At the last meeting of the social partners a week and a half ago, the mood was so bad that the discussions were interrupted after a few hours. For the next round, the unions’ chief negotiators, Reinhold Binder (PRO-GE) and Karl Dürtscher (GPA), already made it clear today: “We will not accept a loss of real wages.”

The two trade unionists set the course of action: “If no agreement is reached on November 2nd, the company meetings will resume from November 6th and union action will be initiated.” Binder and Dürtscher see broad support from employees throughout the metal industry. There was record participation at the 466 company meetings that took place last week.

“The participation is huge”

One thing is certain for Binder and Dürtscher: employers would bear responsibility for impending strikes. “The participation is huge, the support for the unions is enormous, and there is great dissatisfaction with the employers’ disrespectful offer,” it said in a press release today. The basis of the negotiations continues to be annual inflation of 9.6 percent and the union’s demand for 11.6 percent more wages and salaries.

The employers are offering an increase of 2.5 percent and a one-off amount of 1,050 euros. “The reality is: We cannot afford a qualification that is too high,” says Christian Knill, chairman of the Metal Technology Industry Association (FMTI). He recently warned: “Many companies are already calculating how many jobs are at risk due to union demands.”

Just the “chives on bread and butter”

The unions, on the other hand, have announced several times that for them one-off payments are just a “chic in the sandwich”. Recently, PRO-GE boss Binder became even clearer in front of employees: “The one-off payments can go to shit.”
