Austria’s notaries are at the forefront when it comes to digitalization compared to the EU

Since January 1, 2021, almost all notarial official acts can also be carried out online, i.e. without appearing in person at the office.

“A variety of notarial services can now be offered digitally, for example the certification of an electronic signature online, hybrid certification of signatures or signatures or the creation of an electronic notarial act. If the parties have the technical requirements, an online legal service can be a very useful additional tool for those involved. The contracting parties no longer need to be physically present. On the one hand, this makes it easier and saves time for contracting parties who are geographically distant, and it also makes it possible for people who would otherwise have difficulty using notarial services for health or personal reasons. The process developed is a safe and convenient method,” explains Birgit Mohr.

Christian Huber adds: “In comparison to the EU, Austria is actually a pioneer in the area of ​​digitalization. Our clients can carry out all legal services – with the exception of wills – in an uncomplicated and secure manner via a video conference, from the free initial consultation to the signing appointment. Would anyone like e.g. For example, if you want to buy a property, start a company or create a power of attorney, this is now also possible digitally. The main benefit for clients is the time saved. You can complete the appointment from the comfort of your office or home. The often difficult coordination of appointments between several parties involved, for example if one contracting party is abroad, is no longer necessary. The same applies to traveling by car. From this perspective, digital appointments are also much more sustainable.”
