Environment: Environmental aid is taking Mercedes-Benz to the Federal Court of Justice

The car manufacturer is still sticking to the combustion engine – contrary to what was previously announced. Environmental aid doesn’t want to accept that. After a defeat before the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court, the association is now going before the Federal Court of Justice.

In the legal dispute over the climate-friendly orientation of the car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, German Environmental Aid (DUH) wants to go to the Federal Court of Justice. “Two years ago, CEO Källenius promised at the World Climate Conference that he would be able to switch completely to purely electric cars by 2030,” said DUH Federal Managing Director Jürgen Resch on Tuesday. “In fact, Mercedes continues to sell combustion cars, with which they make high profits.” The aim of the lawsuit before the BGH is to force the company to give in.

Among other things, the DUH wants the DAX group to no longer be allowed to sell conventional combustion engines that emit greenhouse gases from November 2030. The association bases its demand on the Paris Climate Protection Agreement and the Climate Protection Act.

Most recently, the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court rejected the claim in the second instance. The plaintiffs have not shown that the state is obliged to prohibit the car manufacturer from selling further combustion engines. The DUH and Greenpeace were also unsuccessful in similar lawsuits against Volkswagen, BMW and the oil and gas company Wintershall DEA in other courts.
