The INDEC reported how much the basic food basket and the total basket (which reflects the dynamics of household spending) increased in October. Both data are more or less in line with inflation for the month.
During October 2023, the monthly variation of the basic food basket (CBA) was 8.6%while that of the total basic basket (CBT) was 8.1%. This reflects that, since the inflationaccording to the consumer price index (CPI) was 8.3% in the same month, the increase in food prices rose more than the average expenses for Argentine families.
To cover the basic food basketa typical family (of four members) needed $160,603 in Octoberwhile to solve the total basic basketthe amount needed was $345,295.
The variations of the CBA and the CBT were 158.6% and 147.1%, in interannual termsand accumulated increases of 139.0% and 126.4% during the year, respectively.
Although considerable increases are observed in the tenth month of this year, it is worth mentioning that both indicators reflected a deceleration compared to August and septemberwhen they registered increases of 17% and 13% respectively in the case of food and 14.3% and 12.2% for total (compared to 8.6% and 8.1% in October).
Basic basket: how much did living cost for each type of family
So, the total basic basket– which includes the Basic Food Basket (CBA) plus non-food goods and services such as clothing, transportation, education, health, among others without counting rent – rose 8.1% in October and was placed at $345,295 for a typical family of four members (two adults and two minors).
In the case of three members These values were located in the $274,895 and if it stops five, at $363,175. The CBA index measures the poverty line, therefore In October, an adult needed $111,746 to not be considered poor.
For its part, the Basic Food Basket (CBA)which determines the threshold of indigence, increased 8.6%, above the CBA. I need at least one adult $51,975 in October to avoid being homeless. In the case of a typical family (four members) the figure was $160,603. In the case of three members $127,858 and for five, $168,919.
