Retail: Consumers prefer to buy from discounters

Older consumers are more likely to go to discount stores than younger people, who prefer the supermarket or health food store. This is the result of a survey on the purchasing behavior of Germans.

Whether milk, bread, fruit and vegetables: when it comes to weekend shopping, supermarkets are only the second choice for consumers. This emerges from a representative survey by the opinion research institute YouGov. 41 percent of people buy everyday products from discounters such as Aldi or Lidl, and 38 percent from supermarkets. Five percent prefer smaller specialist shops and three percent prefer organic shops.

According to the survey, women (43 percent) prefer to go to discount stores than men (39 percent). There are also clear differences when comparing ages: consumers under the age of 25 shop more often in supermarkets (37 percent) than in discounters (32 percent). Smaller specialist shops (8 percent) and organic shops (5 percent) are used significantly more by younger people for their weekly shopping. These shops are less popular with consumers aged 45 and over; specialist shops and organic shops only account for two percent each.

For everyday products, consumers prefer to go to their local stores. 63 percent of those surveyed do all their shopping offline, only 2 percent buy exclusively online.
