Last July the previous Government had agreed with China on the export of wheat, wool and bovine offal. In October the protocol was signed.
The announcement came last week from the Secretary of Agriculture of the Nation: Argentina would begin exporting wheat “for the first time in history” to China. The news was immediately replicated on social networks as an achievement of Javier Milei’s management, although In fact, the opening of this market was started months ago by the previous Government.

The official statement reads: “In an important step for Argentine exports, the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) included Argentine companies authorized to export wheat in the Online Quarantine Registration System of Establishments authorized to export. Vegetables, Animals and their Products entering China. In this way, the market for the export of Argentine wheat to the Asian giant is operational for the first time.”

Another issue is that, strictly speaking, this is not the first time that Argentina has exported wheat to China.According to historical records, in the 1960s, various shipments were made to the Asian giant, but the truth is that for decades this market was not among the main buyers of the Argentine product.
Wheat to China
Specifically, China is the third world importer of wheat with 10 million tons annually and the main countries that supply the cereal are Australia (with 5.7 million tons) and Canada (with 1.8 million tons). Argentina, for its part, during 2023, exported 3 million tons worth US$1,050 million, which reflects the impact of the drought on the previous campaign. In turn, in 2022, 14 million tons were exported for US$4,315 million. For this year the harvest would reach 15.5 million tons.
With regard to the efforts of the previous Government that are currently being crystallized, in July of last year the former Secretary of Agriculture Juan José Bahillo had explained that: “In relation to the export of wheat, after Senasa accepted the proposal presented by China, the GACC (General Administration of Customs of China) agreement remains to move forward with the signing procedure to make this opening official, which represents an excellent opportunity for the agricultural sector of Argentina”.

More here in time, cBy simply following the official communications of the Secretary of Agriculture of the Government of Alberto Fernández, it can be seen that in October of last year Bahillo himself had announced the signing of that protocol key and that in addition the reopening of the Asian market for poultry meat that was closed due to avian flu was being managed.
Continuing in chronological order this week, the Secretary of Agriculture of the Milei administration then announced the completion of a procedure that logically had to include companies authorized to export Argentine cereal. An important fact and worthy of communication but far from the celebration of the libertarian trolls who explicitly thank President Javier Milei.
