Right-wing extremists unfurled a banner on the roof of a building and set off pyrotechnics. They shared a video of it on social media. Those involved were “immediately stopped by police officers and their identities were established,” the police said in a statement. Banners and pyrotechnic items were seized.

According to the organizers, at least 80,000 people took part in the rally under the motto “Defend Democracy”; the police assumed up to 35,000 participants. The event, for which large sections of the ring were closed, passed off peacefully. Restrictions on private and public transport were gradually reduced over the course of the evening, the police said. The ring road was reopened to traffic at 10 p.m.

Demonstrations also took place in Innsbruck and Salzburg at the same time.
