Lufthansa subsidiary: Strike at Austrian Airlines – flight cancellations until Good Friday

The Austrian Lufthansa subsidiary will probably go on strike until Friday afternoon. Around 400 flights were canceled – including to Germany.

The on-board staff of Austrian Airlines (AUA) went on strike before the Easter weekend in the wake of a wage dispute. Because of the campaign, which is planned from Thursday to Friday lunchtime, the Austrian Lufthansa subsidiary canceled a total of 400 flights. In the first few hours, connections between Vienna and German cities, including Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Leipzig, were canceled.

According to the AUA, around 50,000 passengers were affected by the industrial dispute. The company has offered these customers free rebookings or cancellations.

The AUA has offered salary increases of up to 18 percent to staff in the cabin and up to 28 percent in the cockpit. The union is demanding more in order to close the salary gap with Lufthansa, which it says is 40 percent. In the past few weeks, company meetings and a warning strike had already led to hundreds of flight cancellations.

In contrast to the escalating wage conflict at AUA, a wage solution for ground staff was announced at Lufthansa on Wednesday evening. Air travelers do not have to fear strikes by ground staff at Germany’s largest airline over the Easter holidays.
