Services: DHL delivers mail with 35,000 electric vans

Whether Hermes, DPD or market leader DHL – the parcel companies are relying more on electricity than before in order to improve their carbon footprint. The Bonn-based company sets the tone.

The logistics group DHL is making progress on its electric path. “We now use over 35,000 electric vehicles for collection and delivery,” said CEO Tobias Meyer on Friday in Bonn at the general meeting of the logistics company, which operates as Deutsche Post in the national mail business. This means that the global share of the group’s electric vehicles increased to 38 percent at the turn of the year. A year earlier, according to company information, the value was around 28 percent. “By 2030 it should be at least 60 percent,” said Meyer.

In view of the parcel boom in the Internet age, logistics companies are sending significantly more vans and trucks onto the road than before, most of them with combustion engines. The entire industry is trying to improve its carbon footprint with electric vehicles. DHL is in the lead, while its competitors are clearly behind.
