The US fast food chain Taco-Bell is expanding into the German market. The first restaurant will open in Berlin in the summer, with more to follow. What is planned?
The US fast food chain Taco Bell is coming to Germany. The first restaurant is scheduled to open in Berlin this summer, followed by others in the capital, Frankfurt and other German cities. “Our goal is 25 branches this year and 100 to 150 in the next five years,” said the head of the franchise company İş Holding (ISH), Ilkem Sahin, to the German press agency.
He did not want to name the location of the first branch. “The demand is great. There is nothing in Germany that is comparable to Taco Bell,” said Sahin about the expansion plans. The industry magazine “Foodservice” was the first to report on it.
Taco Bell’s focus is on Tex-Mex snacks, a mix of Mexican and American cuisine. In addition to tacos, burritos and quesadillas, bowls and nachos are also offered. There are currently no real Taco Bell branches in Germany, only three locations in US barracks that are not open to the public.
From California to Europe
The US chain was founded in 1962 by Glen Bell in the town of Downey, California. According to its own information, Taco Bell operates more than 7,200 restaurants in the USA through various franchises. Internationally there are around another 1,000 branches in over 30 countries. In Europe, the brand is represented in the Netherlands, Spain and Great Britain, among others. Global sales were approximately $2.4 billion in 2022.
Like KFC and Pizza Hut, Taco Bell is part of the American catering group “Yum! Brands”. Sub-rights for other countries are granted to franchise partners. In addition to Taco Bell, the company İş Holding also owns the franchise rights for the Pizza Hut and KFC chains as well as Krispy Kreme in Germany. Sahin also wants to open the first branches in Germany with the donut brand this year.
