“The decline in waste generation in 2022 affected all types of waste,” the statisticians explained. The biggest decline (6.2 percent to 48.6 million tons) was in so-called municipal waste, i.e. waste mainly from private households. Construction and demolition waste continued to account for by far the largest share at 216.2 million tons; it fell by 2.6 percent.

The recycling rate in 2022 was almost at the same level as the previous year: 326.5 million tons of waste were recycled or “used for energy,” according to the statisticians. 70.2 percent of all waste was recycled, 11.7 percent was incinerated, and 16.3 percent was landfilled.
