Increase Membership Rewards points by 50 percent with the Turbo

With the Turbo at American Express you can collect 50 percent more Membership Rewards points. Is it worth it?

American Express offers an additional turbo program for its Membership Rewards points, which allows you to immediately collect 50 percent more points per euro spent on your card. This is ideal for frequent flyers – because the points can then be converted into miles and used for upgrades, flights and hotels. How to activate the turbo and what to look out for: we have all the information.

Activate Turbo and collect 50 percent more points

Anyone who has decided to use an American Express credit card is automatically connected to the Membership Rewards program and collects one point for every euro spent on the card. The points collected can then be used in a variety of ways. The Turbo option expands this regular program and allows Amex Gold, Platinum, etc. cardholders to collect 1.5 points for every euro spent. Every time the card is used, 50 percent more points are credited to the points account than before. Interesting rewards and advantages are therefore within reach much more quickly. The offer is suitable for anyone who uses their American Express credit card often and wants to use the Turbo to collect a large number of points in an even shorter time in order to then use them specifically for reward flights, for example.

If you don’t yet have an American Express credit card but would like to take part in the Membership Rewards program, you will currently receive 50,000 Membership Rewards points as a welcome bonus when you sign up for the Amex Gold Card. However, this requires that you spend 4,500 euros on the card in the first six months. The advantage: including the activated turbo, you can collect 6,750 more points with the 4,500 euros spent – and it’s worth it.

How the turbo works

Anyone who has an American Express credit card can register for the Turbo. After activating the Turbo, three points are credited for every two euros spent on the card. Anyone who uses their Amex card frequently can quickly accumulate a lot of points this way. The points are automatically credited every time the account is debited.

Interested in an American Express credit card? With the platinum version, new customers receive the highest welcome bonus ever right from the start: 65,000 points are credited to the account. However, to do this, a whopping 10,000 euros must be wagered in the first six months. Here, too, the maximum can be achieved with the activated turbo.

The conditions for the turbo on Membership Rewards points

All private or business cardholders of an American Express card who participate in the Membership Rewards Classic program, including the Platinum and Gold Card as well as the Green Card, can activate the Turbo. The following conditions also apply:

  • Participation in Turbo costs 15 euros per year.
  • There is a limit of 20,000 additional points per year, after which you will receive one point per euro spent.
  • The Turbo can only be activated for one American Express card per account. For example, if you have a Gold and a Platinum Card, you have to choose one of the two. Additional cards are included.
  • The turbo will automatically continue after one year if no timely cancellation is made.

Alternative: The Eurowings Premium credit card for collecting miles

If you fly a lot, the Membership Rewards program is a good option. The Platinum Card from American Express in particular currently offers a high welcome bonus and other additional services and benefits for frequent travelers. However, this option also costs 720 euros per year. The slightly more stripped-down Gold version also costs 144 euros per year.

If you want to collect miles and spend a little less, the Eurowings Premium credit card from Barclays is a good choice. This card is linked to the Miles & More program. Cardholders receive one bonus mile for every two euros spent. Redemption is possible from 3,000 miles – however, new customers receive 3,000 welcome miles for free. The miles are valid for 36 months and can be used for hotel bookings or Eurowings flights. This card is free for new customers in the first year, after which there is an annual fee of 99 euros.

Collect points or miles directly?

With the large welcome bonus and the option to activate the turbo when collecting points, the American Express Gold or Platinum Card is definitely worth it – at least if the advantages are actually used. If these remain unused, the rather high annual fee for the cards may not be worth it. If you only want to collect miles, you can alternatively use the Eurowings Premium credit card. However, these miles can only be redeemed for Eurowings flights.
