German wine is also popular abroad. The export business is becoming increasingly important for winemakers. The market in China is growing particularly strongly.

The export business with German wines increased sharply in the first quarter of 2024. Both the quantity and the value of the wines exported increased by nine percent in the first three months compared to the same quarter last year, according to the German Wine Institute in Bodenheim. This means that around 283,000 hectoliters were sold abroad, generating around 92 million euros.

Exports to China in particular have grown strongly – by 47 percent to 5.4 million euros and by 49 percent to around 10,000 hectoliters. German wine exporters also achieved double-digit growth in turnover and sales in the Netherlands, Poland, Japan and Denmark.

In 2023, sales had already risen by four percent to 384 million euros compared to the previous year, mainly due to price increases. Between April 2023 and March 2024, producers abroad received around 3.35 euros for a liter of wine, which was 13 cents more than in the same period last year.
