The information came from a survey of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Meats and Derivatives of the Argentine Republic (CICCRA).
Why meat consumption fell: the causes
The entity, in a report, pointed out that the brutal drop in consumption occurred despite a price slowdown. Beef values rose 2.4% last May. They were thus well below the 4.2% general increase in the cost of living and the 4.8% increase in “Food and non-alcoholic beverages”; both reported last Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of the Argentine Republic (INDEC).
The CICCRA report indicates that, when comparing the prices of last May with those of the same month of 2023, the increase was 283.9%. The maximum increase corresponded to common minced meat, whose value rose 307.8% in the last twelve months; and the minimum, to the roast, with an increase of 259.7% year-on-year.
In interannual terms, the average increase in prices of beef cuts was lower than the increase in the average value of the standing property (297.2%) and was just above the general level of consumer prices published by INDEC (276.9%).
The president of CICCRA, Miguel Schiaritiin the report estimated that the slowdown in prices recorded “at the butcher counter” and the sharp drop in sales responded to “the significant contraction that the purchasing power of families registered in the last year ”.
