Italy has always been a particularly popular travel destination for Germans: 6.5 million Germans are expected to visit this summer. However, holidaymakers from other countries spend more money.
Italy is expecting around 6.5 million holidaymakers from Germany this summer – more than from any other country. This is the result of a survey published by the tourism association Assoturismo Confesercenti.
This year, most Germans will again be travelling to the seaside or to the large Italian lakes such as Lake Garda. South Tyrol and its mountains also continue to be very popular. German is widely spoken in Italy’s northernmost region.
Overall, Italian tourism experts expect 34.1 million overnight stays by German holidaymakers in the three summer months – around a third of all overnight stays. Compared to the same period last year, this would represent an increase of 3.5 percent. According to figures from the national central bank Banca d’Italia, German citizens spend an average of around 123 euros per day in Italy. Three quarters travel by car.
The other countries with the highest number of foreign tourists are the USA (2.5 million), France (2.3 million), Switzerland and the Netherlands with 1.6 million guests each. American tourists spend the most in Italy, at 210 euros per day.
