Retail: More visitors in German city centers

City centers were more crowded in the first six months of 2024 than in the previous year. The most popular shopping streets saw particularly significant growth – with one exception.

According to an analysis, there are more visitors in German city centers. In the first half of the year, pedestrian traffic was 2.5 percent higher nationwide than in the previous year. This is the result of a study by the service provider Hystreet, which measures visitor numbers in city centers.

The two most visited shopping streets are still in Munich. Kaufinger Strasse recorded 13.8 million passers-by in the first six months of the year, seven percent more. Neuhauser Strasse recorded 13.4 million, an increase of four percent. Georgstrasse in Hanover increased by eight percent to 11.4 million, and Königstrasse in Stuttgart even increased by 20 percent to 10.1 million. Schildergasse in Cologne had the same number. This was two percent less than in the same period last year.

The experts at Hystreet recently observed a special effect as a result of the European Football Championship. The tournament attracted an extraordinary amount of visitors in June, especially in the host cities. The strongest increase was recorded on Königstrasse in Stuttgart (+36.6 percent), Kaufingerstrasse in Munich (+17.2), Bahnhofstrasse in Gelsenkirchen (+13.3) and Westenhellweg in Dortmund (+11.7). “Events are generally a key to lively city centers. This applies not only to major events such as the European Football Championship, but also to classic city festivals and city events,” said Hystreet Managing Director Julian Aengenvoort.

Hystreet uses laser scanners to count pedestrian frequencies fully automatically in 110 cities at 311 locations around the clock, all year round. According to the company, the accuracy is 99 percent. The digital data is available to everyone on the company platform.
