Housing: High rents and property prices often prevent people from moving

A large majority thinks that the federal government is not doing enough to ensure affordable housing. Many people no longer dare to move.

Almost one in three people in Germany would like to move – but according to a survey, many are unable to do so due to high rents and property prices. In a survey conducted by the YouGov opinion research institute, 58 percent said they were satisfied with their living situation. 18 percent said they were planning to move. 20 percent would like to move but have no concrete plans.

More than half of those surveyed (52 percent) said that high costs prevented them from moving or at least made the search more difficult. In cities, high rents and property prices are perceived as a greater problem than in rural areas.

According to the survey, too little living space in the desired area is also an obstacle to moving for more than one in three people – slightly more in the western states than in the east. Professional, health and family reasons also prevent people from moving. 16 percent of those surveyed said they could not move because they were tied to a certain rent cap when receiving social assistance.

A large majority of almost 80 percent think that the federal government does not care enough about affordable housing. At the same time, however, they consider other political issues to be much more important. The ranking of the most important issues is led by immigration policy, well ahead of environmental and climate protection, pensions, and defense and security. According to the survey, the issue of housing and rents concerns Left Party voters the most, and AfD voters the least.

YouGov surveyed 2,064 people aged 18 and over in Germany in mid-July.
