Inflation leads and poverty follows

A global study by Ipsos on citizens’ concerns revealed that in Argentina what worries them the most is the inflationalthough the problem that has grown the most in recent times is the unemployment or fear of losing one’s job.

Is your country going in the right direction or on the wrong path? This was one of the key questions in the latest global survey “What worries the world”, conducted by Ipsos, a world leader in market research, last July.

This research, which covered 29 countries and more than 25,000 adults between 17 and 74 years old, indicated that Singapore leads the positive ranking regarding the perception of the direction of countries, with almost 80% of its citizens perceiving that the country is going in the right direction.

By contrast, Peru ranks last with 92% of citizens believing the country is going in the wrong direction. In Argentina, opinion is almost evenly divided: 51% believe the country is heading in the right direction, while 49% think the opposite.

The concern in the country about the crime and violence (39%) exceeds the global average (30%), although it is lower than in other countries in the region such as Peru (57%), Mexico (48%) and Brazil (42%).

Compared to last year, Argentina showed the greatest improvement in perception of the economic situation. Colombia and Chile They also show improvements, while in Mexico and Peru record a decrease in these indicators compared to last year.

Although the inflation in Argentina remains a major concern, reaching 51% in June 2024, unemployment escalated rapidly, reaching 47% that same month. This increase puts unemployment close to surpassing inflation as the main economic concern.

In this context, Ipsos indicated that the perception of the economy suffered a setback since the arrival Javier Milei to the Government. After three months of slight improvement, positive economic sentiment decreased by one percentage point in June 2024, with only 15% of the population considering that the economy is in good shape, but above the situation assessed a year ago (6%).

Meanwhile, the poverty and social inequality remain significant concerns. 41% of respondents mentioned these two issues as central, although this was a slight decrease compared to the previous month.

What are the global trends?

As in Argentina, at a global level, the inflation It stabilized as the most worrying issue at 33% in 29 countries, although it remains the main concern for more than two consecutive years.

Globally, pessimism about the direction of countries is increasing, with the proportion of people who believe their country is on the right track down by three percentage points since the beginning of the year.
