For a long time, the Bahlsen company downplayed its role in National Socialism. Now two historians show how the biscuit baker actually treated female forced laborers.
Mr Berghoff, Mr Grieger, what was going through your mind when you heard the statements made by Verena Bahlsen, who, when asked about her company legacy, said in 2019 that her grandfather had “treated the forced laborers well”?
Manfred Grieger: I was surprised. That was more or less what was being said in the 70s and 80s. There was no need to continue this narrative, which had already caused enough conflicts in public.
She should have known better?
Grieger: Go to the cinema or watch television: National Socialism has never been discussed more than today.
