Transport: Hamburg students can order free Germany ticket

Around 210,000 eligible people from Hamburg can apply for the ticket. The ticket allows the use of local and regional public transport.

Hamburg schoolchildren can order a free Germany ticket. This was announced by the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV). With the ticket, schoolchildren can use local and regional public transport nationwide from the start of the new school year in September. Existing HVV Germany tickets for schoolchildren will be automatically converted. “Hamburg is taking on a pioneering role here, as it is the first federal state to make a free HVV Germany ticket available for schoolchildren nationwide,” said a spokeswoman for the HVV when asked.

“I am delighted that we will be able to offer more than 210,000 children and young people in Hamburg a larger and more attractive mobility option from September 1st,” said Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens). The Senate expects that around 168,000 schoolchildren – around 80 percent of those eligible – will use the option, according to a communication from the Senate to the citizens. The new regulation is expected to cost the budget almost 14 million euros this year. For next year, the Senate is calculating almost 99 million euros based on the price of 49 euros per month that passengers currently have to pay for the Deutschlandticket.
