Renewable energies: Record in July: More electricity from the sun than ever before

The boom in renewable energies is progressing: in July, a record was set in Germany with the help of the sun. Even rainy days could not change that.

Electricity generation from solar energy reached a record high in Germany in July. “In July, around 10 terawatt hours of solar power were produced, the most in a month, even though solar radiation was lower than last year,” said Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) to the Funke media group. “This means that our measures are working and there is more and more solar power. The expansion is in full swing.”

The expansion of solar systems has picked up speed significantly. According to figures from the Federal Network Agency, the number of new installations doubled last year compared to the previous year, to almost 14 gigawatts.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the total output of installed solar systems was more than 90 gigawatts at the end of June. This means that the federal government’s target of an installed capacity of 88 gigawatts in 2024 was already achieved in the first half of the year. By 2030, the installed capacity is expected to be 215 gigawatts.
