Hotel entrepreneurs warn of a sharp drop in foreign tourism due to the exchange rate lag

INDEC shared a survey on foreign tourism in the country. The lack of promotion and the exchange rate lag explain the drop in the number of international visitors.

According to the Hotel Occupancy Surveyspread by the INDECforeign tourism suffered a sharp decline in 2024, reaching a rate of 1.5% 20.7% year-on-year in June. In addition, according to the data, Argentina has accumulated a decrease of 2.5% between January and Junecompared to the same period in 2023.

The data was collected by the Hotel Occupancy Survey, released by INDEC. The data, which recorded a drop in 2.5% between January and June compared to the same period in 2023 and a year-on-year drop of 20.7%, are worrying the sector. In addition, resident tourism fell by 19% year-on-year.

Hotel entrepreneurs attributed these figures to two major causes. Firstly, the aim was to exchange rate lagsince Argentina, in recent months, became more expensive in dollars and could not compete against other destinations. Finally, the data showed that para-hotel establishments and hotels rated with 1 and 2 stars had the longer average staywith 2.5 nights each. Regarding the regions, the Patagonia led the ranking of stays, with a measurement of 2.8 nights, followed by Buenos Aires with 2.7. The largest number of stays were by travelers from Mercosur, with a total of 51.2%.
