Trade dispute: Tariffs on electric cars: China threatens Canada with countermeasures

More and more Western countries are trying to keep Chinese electric cars out of their markets with tariffs. Beijing is not going to let this happen.

China has threatened Canada with countermeasures for imposing high tariffs on electric cars. The Chinese embassy in Canada said it would take “all necessary measures” to protect the rights and interests of Chinese companies.

The 100 percent tariff on electric cars from China will “harm trade and economic relations between China and Canada,” the statement said. The Canadian government is acting against the interests of Canadian consumers and businesses. It will also harm global efforts to combat climate change.

The USA and EU have also imposed tariffs

In addition to the tariffs on electric cars, Canada’s government had previously announced tariffs of 25 percent on Chinese steel and aluminum products. The measures are intended to create fair conditions for the domestic industry, as Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized. Chinese manufacturers are benefiting, among other things, from a government-imposed policy of overcapacity and laxer standards for protecting workers and the environment, argues the Canadian government.

In May, the US government ordered additional tariffs of 100 percent on electric cars from China. The EU Commission followed suit in June with its own plans, which, however, provide for different tariffs depending on the manufacturer.
