After engine fire: EU agency demands investigation at Airbus

Shortly after takeoff of an Airbus A350, a fire broke out in one of its engines. The responsible EU agency responded.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is demanding further investigations following engine problems on an Airbus aircraft. At least part of the A350 fleet will be required to be inspected, EASA told the German Press Agency in response to a request.

The background to the action, which is described as a “precautionary measure,” is reportedly an incident that occurred on September 1. An engine fire broke out shortly after takeoff on an A350-1041 aircraft operated by Cathay Pacific on a flight from Hong Kong to Zurich, the aviation safety agency said. The fire was immediately discovered and extinguished, and the aircraft flew safely back to Hong Kong.

It is still unclear what exact requirements EASA will impose on the upcoming inspections. The aviation safety agency plans to publish further details. Airbus announced that it has taken note of the information from EASA and is working closely with the authorities to implement the measures. The A350 aircraft are passenger aircraft that are used on long-haul routes, for example.
