Trade: Dispute over car tariffs: Habeck wants political solution with China

Economics Minister Robert Habeck meets Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao. The main topic is likely to be one topic.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck wants to find a political solution to the EU’s dispute with China over car tariffs. The Green politician said this before a meeting with Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao in Berlin. Habeck said on the sidelines of a start-up summit that it was his aim to find a political solution. The Chinese side appears to be ready for this.

Habeck referred to a conversation with the trade minister during a visit to China in June. He spoke of very open, tough, but also very honest discussions. “We really did freestyle boxing, if you can put it that way.” But this created trust because nothing about it became public.

In June, the EU announced higher tariffs on Chinese electric cars after a months-long investigation. Chinese manufacturers would then have to accept surcharges on the existing standard import duties for their electric cars. According to Brussels, manufacturers in China are unfairly benefiting from state subsidies and distorting the EU market with cheap vehicles. Beijing accuses the EU of protectionism and has already responded with investigations into, among other things, pork imports from the EU.
