The Christmas menu could be expensive – at least for those who use a lot of butter. Industry insiders expect a radical increase in prices by the end of the year.
According to the Bavarian Milk Producers’ Association, butter in German retail could become more expensive than ever before by Christmas. The association’s managing director, Hans-Jürgen Seufferlein, told the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” newspaper with regard to the current price of 2.09 euros for 250 grams of branded butter in discount stores and supermarkets: “That will certainly not be the end. We will probably see new record prices by the end of the year.”
Butter price could rise to over two euros
According to the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, the previous record for the price of butter was reached in autumn 2022 at 2.29 euros. By August 2023, it had fallen to 1.39 euros – and has been rising again since then. Seufferlein cited a decline in production as the reason for the increase: numerous farms have given up dairy farming. At the same time, demand is currently increasing.
