Lidl Group records 350,000 cyber attacks every day

The number has increased a hundredfold since the beginning of the war: The Lidl Group is being exposed to more and more cyber attacks – and from one country in particular.

According to a media report, the parent company of the food discounters Lidl and Kaufland is confronted with up to 350,000 cyber attacks every day, most of them from Russia. Before the war in Ukraine began, there were around 3,500 attacks every day. “Now we are attacked 350,000 times a day, mostly from Russia.”

Lidl also wants to help other companies

The group is therefore developing solutions to defend against such attacks together with the US company ServiceNow, which specializes in artificial intelligence (AI). The AI software is available to all other companies, including competitors from the retail sector, Chrzanowski told SZ. “We compete on eggs, bananas and milk. But not on cybersecurity. We have to work together here. If one of us is attacked, it affects all of us.”

It’s about establishing “digital sovereignty” in contrast to US providers. “There is data that should not be on a server in another country.” The Neckersulm-based company is also planning a new AI platform for European retail by 2025, which will, among other things, avoid queues at checkouts.
