Tourism in Germany: Germany had more tourists in August than ever before

Vacationing in Germany is trendy. Never before have so many people stayed overnight in tourist establishments as this August. One division in particular is generating growth.

In August, more tourists stayed overnight in Germany than ever before. 59 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests represent the strongest month ever recorded, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. The industry has finally left the Corona crisis behind it, as the highest value to date dates back to July 2019, when around 200,000 fewer overnight stays were counted. Only larger companies with at least ten overnight accommodations are taken into account in the statistics.

The campsites in particular registered significantly more guests than before. With 9.7 million overnight stays, there was also a new record in this sub-segment. The previous record of 9.5 million overnight stays came from August 2022.

Significantly more guests came from abroad

Guests from abroad made an above-average contribution to the all-time record. The number of overnight stays rose by 5.7 percent to 10.1 million compared to the same month last year. Domestic residents stayed overnight 48.9 million times. That was 2.8 percent more than in August 2023. For both groups together, the increase over the year was 3.3 percent.

In the first eight months of the year, the comparative figure for all overnight stays from the previous year was exceeded by 2 percent with 339.3 million overnight stays. Here, too, the number of foreign visitors increased more than that of domestic visitors, although they also returned to their German holiday destinations more quickly after the pandemic.
