This year the prestigious award goes to Daron Acemoğlu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson.
Traditionally, the announcements of the Nobel Prize winners are concluded with the announcement in the economics category. This year, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm is honoring Daron Acemoğlu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson for their research on global wealth inequalities.
US economists dominate Nobel Prize in economics
Last year, US economist Claudia Goldin was honored with the Nobel Prize in Economics for her research on the role of women in the labor market. This was special for two reasons: Firstly, the professor at the elite Harvard University was only the third woman to receive the award in this category. On the other hand, the prize was awarded to her alone – in the previous five years, two or three winners had shared it.
However, one thing has remained the same with Goldin’s Nobel Prize: the dominance of the USA in this prize category. The year before, the former US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the American economists Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig were honored with the Nobel Prize for their research into banks and financial crises, and in general the award very often goes to winners who come from the USA or who work at least at US universities.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first and only award for a German: In 1994, the Bonn scientist Reinhard Selten (1930-2016) was awarded the Nobel Prize together with John Nash and John Harsanyi for their groundbreaking contributions to non-cooperative game theory been awarded.
All 2024 winners have been announced
The Nobel Prize winners in the prize categories of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace were announced last week. In contrast to these awards, the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences does not go back to the will of the dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), but has been donated by the Swedish central bank since the end of the 1960s.
Nevertheless, the Nobel Prize in Economics, as well as the other prizes, will be ceremoniously presented on the anniversary of Nobel’s death on December 10th. It also comes with the same prize money as the other awards – this year that is eleven million Swedish crowns (just under 970,000 euros) per category.
