World Pasta Day: Noodles in trend: more pasta, less spaetzle

Germans’ hunger for Italian pasta is growing. However, a type of pasta that is particularly valued in southern Germany is finding fewer and fewer friends.

When pasta is served on the table in Germany, it is usually Italian pasta. 379,400 tons were imported from the southern EU country last year, as the Federal Statistical Office reported on World Pasta Day (October 25). That was an impressive 86.2 percent of total imports, which reached a record of 440,300 tons. A few pasta products were also imported from Austria and Greece.

Noodle imports have increased by 21 percent in the past ten years. Domestic production cannot keep up with a total of 291,500 tons, even if this also means growth of 6.5 percent. Around 96,000 tons of German production were exported, with France and Great Britain as the main buyer countries.

For the first time in 2023, more pasta without eggs was produced in Germany than pasta with the chicken product. The local egg noodle is the big loser in the generally rising noodle trend, with a decline of 28.8 percent in the ten years.
