Consumption in Germany is only gaining momentum slowly. Many businesses are feeling this. The latest figures give hope.
Germany’s retailers also did better business in September than in the previous month and are somewhat more confident about the future. Without taking price increases (real) into account, sales increased by 1.2 percent in September, according to calculations by the Federal Statistical Office. In nominal terms, revenues were 0.6 percent above the August 2024 level, as the authority in Wiesbaden announced.
Most recently, local retailers achieved higher sales in September 2022 than in September of the current year. Compared to September 2023, sales were almost four percent higher in both real and nominal terms.
The Ifo Institute, which regularly surveys the mood in the industry, came to the conclusion in its latest economic survey from October that retailers are overall in a “slightly more positive mood”: They therefore assess their current situation slightly better. However, business expectations for the next few months remained almost unchanged at a low level.
